ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION NON-DESTRUCTIVE ASSAY

Pulsed neutron generator driven equipment for material and item non-destructive assay and elemental analysis

VNIIA is involved in the development and serial production of the equipment that uses nuclear physical methods for material and item NDA and elemental analysis as well as for fissile material detection, etc.

The following types of equipment have been developed and are under serial production:

• equipment for preventing illicit trafficking of fissile materials in luggage, mail, etc.;
• equipment for identifying a type of toxic agents with the application of the non-destructive neutron-radiation method;
• equipment for detecting/determining micro-quantities of light element admixtures in metals and alloys;
• system for determining content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium during the mineral fertilizer manufacturing process.

The equipment operation is based on irradiation of an item under inspection with neutron flux emitted by the neutron generator, detection of secondary neutron and/or gamma radiation from the item and analysis of the secondary radiation time and energy characteristics.

The portable neutron generators developed by VNIIA are used as neutron sources in all types of the equipment.
